HGTV has made “do it yourself” (DIY) projects very popular these days. You put in more time and effort on your end and save a few bucks on something you want or need. When it comes to projects in the backyard or around the house, this usually works out pretty well. YouTube has made it easy to learn how to do pretty much anything. However, when it comes to estate planning, online legal services may not be the best option.
Using an online tool to create a will or trust is a great start, but relying on a generic “fill-in-the-blank” form can inadvertently leave quite a bit out. Every person, family, and business has very unique needs and goals. Making sure your estate plan is consistent is one of the advantages an attorney can provide. For example, if your will directs certain assets to someone, but the beneficiary designation states something else, those assets won’t be distributed as you’ve intended. Using an expert to help you with this very important process ensures that all the necessary questions are asked and no details are missed. Sometimes DIY is the right answer, sometimes it is not.
